about FireFly project

Key objectives are Prevention and Protection, Capacity Building, Innovation and Public Awareness.

Our Mission

The FireFly project aims to prevent and manage cross-border forest fires by establishing a cooperation protocol for rapid response, effective surveillance and intervention strategies. This minimizes fire impact on ecosystems, wildlife, property and human lives.
Key objectives are Prevention and Protection, Capacity Building, Innovation and Public Awareness.
Forest fires cross borders, causing rapid destruction of natural and residential areas, thus requiring coordinated responses. While local efforts may lack scale and data, cross-border collaboration allows resource pooling for greater impact.
This project is vital as regions host critical forests, NATURA sites, wetlands and national parks that support environmental sustainability and tourism.
Early fire detection is essential for climate change mitigation, as forests act as carbon sinks; burning releases CO2, increasing the risks of desertification and flooding.

Our Actions

The diverse partners, with strong EU project experience and broad geographic reach, ensure high-quality deliverables, wide impact and lasting results.
Key innovations include: • Gyroplane: Advanced aircraft, operates in extreme conditions, requires no runway and can serve as an air ambulance.
• AI Fire Detection System: Smart cameras with AI and machine learning for early fire detection.
• Specialized Firefighting SUV: Navigates challenging terrains, equipped with versatile firefighting tools.
• Joint Pilot Actions: Aerial surveillance, coordinated simulation and international air rally for rapid target detection.
• Symposium: Connects EU, administrative and civil protection leaders.
Additional activities involve using GIS, disaster management and First Aid training, studies, study visits, social/media campaigns and public awareness events.
The project builds expertise in advanced technologies, shares knowledge and best practices, and fosters collaboration among public bodies, experts, volunteers and citizens to create resilient, inclusive communities.

FireFly has an amazing team of hard working professionals. It has been a pleasure to meet them.”
